이 글은 지금까지 논의된 신라 왕릉 가운데 특히 혼란이 일고 있는 십이지신장상을 가진 능묘의 주인공 비정과 그 능묘 자체의 변천 과정을 좀 더 명확히 하는 방법은 없을까라는 의문에서 호석의 구조와 십이지신장상 자체의 분석을 실시하여 변천 과정을 추출함으로써 앞으로 왕릉 비정을 위한 기본작업으로 시도되었다.
십이지신장상을 가진 신라의 능묘는 그것이 가진 몇 가지 속성, 즉 복식, 십이지신장상의 두향, 조각수법, 화면의 비례 등에 의해서 적어도 두 계열의 축조집단이 상정된다. 이 축조집단은 시기에 따라 변천하고, 서로 영향을 준 것으로 판단할 수 있고, 최종적으로는 무복에 장방형에 가까운 화폭의 화풍과 곡면각 조각수법의 집단이 십이지신장상을 새기고 그 능묘를 축조하였다.
봉분 외표시설의 형식, 즉 호석과 그 부대시설의 구성, 호석의 단면 형태, 호석에 배치된 십이지신장상을 가진 탱석의 배열, 그 탱석의 크기와 화폭 비례, 십이지신장상 두향 등은 시기에 따라 변천하는 요소로 볼 수 있고, 이에 대한 형식 분류는 능원시설에 의한 신라 왕릉의 변천 과정과 순조롭게 연결됨으로 십이지신장상을 가진 신라 능묘의 변천 과정을 지적해 준다.
변천 과정의 추출 결과 십이지신장상을 가진 신라 능묘는 전성덕왕릉 괘릉(원성왕릉) 흥덕왕릉·전헌덕왕릉 전경덕왕릉 전김유신묘·구황동왕릉지 전진 덕여왕릉 구정동방형분의 순서가 도출된다.

In the question of how to determine more clearly the owner of royal mausoleums with the twelve zodiac animal signs which are especially in arguing among Silla-royal mausoleums discussed until now and the process of the change of that royal mausoleum itself, this article was written for the fundamental operations of hypothesis about the royal mausoleum by extracting the process of the change through analyzing the structure of stone circle and the twelve zodiac animal signs itself.
Silla-royal mausoleums which have the twelve zodiac animal signs are assumed to be at least two series of construction group by several property, that is costume, the direction of head of the twelve zodiac animal signs, sculpture techniques, the proportion of screen, etc. It is possible to think that these two groups underwent changes with time and had impacts on each other. And finally painting which use similar to the rectangular canvas with a shamanist costume and group of curved-shaped sculpture carved the twelve zodiac animal signs and constructed the mausoleums.
It is possible to see the form of outside installation of burial mound such as formation of stone circle and the facility, the arrangement of Taengseok located in stone circle with the twelve zodiac animal signs, size of Taengseok, proportion of canvas, the direction of head of the twelve zodiac animal signs, etc as elements that changed over time. And because type classification for these things is closely related to transition of tomb facility of Silla-royal mausoleums, type classification for these things points out the transition of Silla-royal mausoleums with the twelve zodiac animal signs.
