The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of trekking sticks on CK, LDH and myoglobin, which are exertional rhabdomyolysis markers during uphill and downhill climbing with and without trekking sticks. The participants were divided into 4 groups: 1) uphill + stick (n=8); 2) uphill + no stick (n=8); 3) downhill + stick (n=8), and; 4) downhill with no stick (n=8). The blood concentration of myoglobin of these four groups was analyzed in three conditions: 1) before climbing; 2) after climbing, and; 3) 36 hours after climbing. The results were as follows. First, CK concentration was significantly higher after climbing and 36 hours after climbing, whether or not the stick was used (p<.001). Second, CK concentration was significantly higher after climbing and 36 hours after climbing than before climbing, whether or not it was uphill or downhill climbing. Third, LDH concentration was significantly higher after climbing and 36 hours after climbing for both the uphill with stick group and that with no stick group than before climbing. However, for the group with no stick, after climbing, the LDH concentration recovered to normal. Fourth, Myoglobin concentration was significantly higher for the uphill climbing group after climbing 36 hours than before climbing, whether or not the stick was used. Fifth, Myoglobin concentration was significantly higher after climbing and 36 hours after climbing for the downhill climbing group than before climbing, whether the stick was used or not. In sum, the effects of the trekking stick did not appear in CK and myoglobin but only in LDH. It is suggested to conduct a study with more participants focusing on the intensity and the time of climbing.
