본 연구에서는 『기생 및 창기에 관한 서류철』을 적극적으로 활용한 연구들 가운데 황보명(2004)의 「식민지 권력에 의한 몸의 통제–일제시대 기생조합 설립을 중심으로」를 중심으로, 『기생 및 창기에 관한 서류철』의 ‘기생 관련 서류’와 ‘창기 관련 서류’의 착각･오독(誤讀)으로 인해 파생된 다양한 학술적 오류들과 오인(誤認), 오기(誤記) 등을 당대의 사료들과 『서류철』 원문의 정확한 해독과 분석을 통해서 객관적이고 실증적으로 규명하였다.
황보명(2004)의 「식민지 권력에 의한 몸의 통제–일제시대 기생조합 설립을 중심으로」에는 1. ‘기생조합’을 ‘성병검사’ 대상집단으로 오인, 2. ‘기부(妓夫)’와 ‘창부(娼夫)･포주(抱主)’의 개념적 혼동과 미구분, 3. 『서류철』에 대한 문서적 정의에 있어서 ‘창기 관련 서류들’에만 치우친 편협한 정의로 『서류철』의 본질적 성격 왜곡 및 기생(妓生)에 대한 잘못된 인식의 생산, 4. ‘창기조합’인 ‘비공식적 건강진단조합’･‘경성유녀조합(한도유녀조합)’을 ‘최초의 기생조합’으로 오인, 5. ‘창기조합의 설립과정’을 ‘기생조합의 설립과정’으로 착각, 6. ‘한성창기조합소’와 ‘한성기생조합소’를 ‘동일한 조직’으로 착각, 7. 「기생단속령(근대식 기생제도)」을 「창기단속령(공창제도)」과 유사한 법령으로 오인, 8. 「기생단속령」을 ‘공창제도’의 하위범주로 착각하는 등 다양한 학술적 오류들이 등장한다.
결과적으로 이러한 오류들은 당시 ‘가무(歌舞)를 전업으로 하던 예술인(藝術人)인 기생(妓生)의 본질’과 ‘『기생 및 창기에 관한 서류철』의 본질적인 성격’을 왜곡시키는 결과를 초래했다. 따라서 이러한 오류들에 대한 정정 내용을 올바르게 이해하고 인식해야 ‘전문 예술인이었던 기생(妓生)에 대한 왜곡된 인식’을 올바르게 바로잡을 수 있을 것이다.
This study analyzed and reviewed on the historical records and the bibliographies to correct the academic errors caused by the misunderstanding and misreading of the Gisaeng and prostitute-related documents in Records of Gisaeng and Changgi. ‘A Study on Control of Body by Colonial Powers – Foundation of Gisaeng Association During Colonial Korea’ by Hwang Bomyeong (2004) involves numbers of academic errors as follows: 1. Mistaken “Gisaeng Association” as a group that took STD test, 2. Distorted the fundamental characteristics of Bibliographies on Records of Gisaeng and Changgi and produced the wrong perception toward Gisaeng, 3. Mistaken “Hanseong Prostitute Association” and “Hanseong Gisaeng Association” as the same organization. In conclusion, such academic errors resulted in distorting “Essence of Gisaeng as an entertainer specializing in singing and dancing” and “Fundamental characteristics of Records of Gisaeng and Prostitute.” Thus, these errors must be corrected properly to prevent the repeated reproduction of the wrong information.
