Physical and Mathematical Modeling of Residence Time Distribution and Grade Transition in a Twin-Strand Slab Caster Tundish
In the present study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling was used to predict flow patterns in a twin-strand tundish, which were validated against 1:3 scale water model experiments using particle image velocimetry (PIV) and flow visualization. The residence time distribution (RTD) curves were obtained by measuring electrical conductivity at the tundish outlets, using NaCl solution as a tracer. Dead zone volume was calculated by RTD analysis, and the results were compared with CFD modeling predictions. The grade transition process was studied using the water model to identify the optimized operation parameters for reducing the amount of intermixed grades.
