Analysis of Phosphorus Band in Interstitial-Free High-Strength Steel

The high strength and good formability characteristics of Interstitial Free High Strength (IF-HS) steel makes it an obvious chioce over the mild interstitial free steel for manufacturing automotive body panels [1][2]. The major strengthening mechanism employed in IF-HS steels is solution hardening, and the typical elements added for this purpose are phosphorus, manganese and silicon[3]. In addition to the formability and strength, the sheets used for outer body application should also meet the stringent surface quality requirement. To meet this surface quality requirement, steelmakers need to critically examine the coils either through automatic surface inspection system or by manual inspection before dispatching to the customer.
