In order to thoroughly analyze the fundamental causes behind the absence of social spirituality, encompassing aspects such as public responsibility, communication, empathy, and hospitality, this article directs its focus toward the concept of prosperous spirituality. The intent is not to rehash discussions on faith solely for blessings and prosperity theology, but rather to engage in an ethical examination. What sets this article apart from ongoing debates is its differentiation of the pursuit of blessings in Korean Christianity from traditional religions. The contextualization of Protestant Missionary Ministry led to the marginalization of the ethics of being disciple due to its emphasis on blessings. The aftermath of wartime experiences and the struggle for survival further contributed to the relegation of discipleship. Of particular significance is the prosperity theology of 3 John 1:2, which Korean Christianity has heavily accentuated, promoting a distorted emphasis on prosperity and distorting discipleship into a mere auxiliary element. As a result, an aberrant phenomenon arises where the discipleship is overshadowed. To propose an alternative approach to address the issue of prosperous spirituality, the article draws inspiration from Miroslav Volf’s call for a faith that extends into the public sphere. This concept is intertwined with insights from modern humanities to advocate for the human flourishing and pursuit of social spirituality, incorporating attributes such as public responsibility, communication, empathy, and hospitality. The primary focus is on prioritizing a social spirituality deeply rooted in discipleship. Fundamentally, the objective is to nurture an authentic embodiment of the ethics of being a disciple.

한국기독교가 공적 책임과 소통, 공감과 환대의 사회적 영성을 결여했다고 지탄받고 있는 현실에서, 그 원인을 성찰하기 위하여, 이 글은 잘되는 영성의 문제에 착안하였다. 기복신앙과 번영신학에 관한 논의들 을 재탕하려는 것이 아니다. 한국기독교가 잘됨에 집착한 나머지 제자 됨을 상실하고 왜곡시켜왔다는 사실에 주목함으로써, 잘되는 영성을 극복하고 사회적 영성을 복원해야 함을 제안하는 윤리학적 논의이다. 이러한 뜻에서, 이 글은 한국기독교의 기복신앙이 전통적 민간신앙 의 기독교 버전일 것이라는 기존의 논의들과 궤를 달리하였다. 개신교 선교부가 한국적 상황화 과정에서 복을 말하면서 제자 됨을 생략했고, 전쟁경험과 생존동기에서 비롯된 잘됨의 추구는 제자 됨을 뒷전으로 밀어냈다. 무엇보다도, 한국기독교가 지대한 관심을 가져온 요삼1:2 에 대한 번영신학적 해석은 잘됨을 강조하고 제자 됨을 잘됨의 부속요 소로 왜곡시키는 결과를 낳았다. 본질적 가치에 속하는 제자 됨이 잘 됨에 밀려나는 기현상이 나타나고 있는 셈이다. 잘되는 영성의 문제를 극복하기 위한 대안의 하나로 제자도에 근거한 사회적 영성의 추구를 제안하기 위하여, 현대인문학자들의 관심을 응용 하면서 볼프의 공적 신앙에 대한 요청을 연결고리로 삼았다. 잘되는 영성에 휘둘릴 것이 아니라 공적 책임과 소통, 공감과 환대에 이르는 사회적 영성을 추구해야 한다는 제안을 위해서이다. 다만, 인문학자들 의 관심에 자극을 받아서 혹은 시민사회의 비난을 모면하기 위한 방편으 로 사회적 영성을 말하기보다 제자도에 근거한 사회적 영성을 추구해야 한다. 예수 그리스도의 제자 됨을 구현하기 위한 관심에서 잘되는 영성 을 자성하고 사회적 영성을 향하여 나아가야 한다는 뜻이다.
