본 논문에서는 아이리스 매리언 영(Iris Marion Young)이 제시한 ‘법적 책임 모델’과 ‘사회적 연결 모델’ 사이의 구분을 검토한다. 영에 따르면, 부정의한 사회적 구조로부터 발생하는 문제에 대해 사회 구성원들의 책임을 다루기 위해서는 우리가 개별 행위에 대해 책임을 묻는 방식과 다른 관점을 필요로 한다. 이와 같은 이유에서 영은 우리가 기존의 행위중심적 책임을 논의하는 관점을 ‘법적 책임 모델’로, 그리고 부정의한 사회적 관행들에 대한 참여자들의 책임을 묻는 관점을 ‘사회적 연결 모델’로 명명한다. 우리는 이 논의를 요약적으로 살펴본 뒤, 해당 구분의 유효성에 의문을 제기하는 배리(Barry)와 맥도널드(Macdonald)의 비판에 대답을 시도한다. 배리와 맥도널드는 구조적 부정의에 대한 책임 논의가 법적 책임 모델의 확장을 통해 이루어질 수 있기에, 사회적 연결 모델과 같은 별도의 책임관이 불필요하다고 주장한다. 나는 이 반론이 분명 유의미하지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 우리가 문제시하려는 구조적 부정의의 층위를 다루기에는 여전히 좁은 것으로 나타난다는 한계를 안고 있다는 점을 지적한다.

In this paper, I examine the distinction between the ‘liability model’ and the ‘social connection mode’ suggested by Iris Marion Young. According to Young, dealing with the problems arising from unjust social structures requires a different perspective from the way we hold ourselves accountable for individual actions. For this reason, Young categorizes our current view of specific action-oriented responsibility as the ‘liability model,’ whereas the view of asking participants to take responsibility for unjust social practices as the ‘social connection model’. We briefly review the distinction and attempt to answer the criticisms of C. Barry and K. MacDonald that question the validity of the distinction. Barry and MacDonald argue that the social connection model can be replaced with the extension of the liability model, which makes Young’s suggestion unnecessary. I believe the extended liability model is still narrow to improve structural injustice, so that the social connection model should not be abandoned yet.
