굿에이커의 지적처럼 공관복음 문제－복음서의 유사성과 상이성-는 주로 ‘문서’들의 상관관계를 밝히는 자료비평이나 편집비평에 근거해 설명되어 왔다. 하지만 이는 예수전승의 다양한 단계를 충분히 고려하지 못한 결과이다. 예수전승은 최소한 세 단계를 거쳤는데, 예수전승의 형성, 전달, 기록이 바로 그것이다. 예수전승의 형성과 전달단계가 기록단계보다 훨씬 더 오랫동안 지속된 점, 예수전승의 형성과 전달단계에서 주로 ‘기억과 입’을 통해 전승이 보존되고 전달되었다는 점, 또한 기록단계에서조차 구두전승이 광범위하게 사용되었다는 점을 감안한다면, 공관복음 문제를 해결하는 데 있어 구술 이론과 기억 이론을 도입하는 것은 적절하고 또한 시급해 보인다. 이 논문은 공관복음 문제 중 특히 복음서의 상이성을 새롭게 이해할 수 있는 다양한 길을 제시한다.
복음서의 상이성은 전통적으로 복음서 기자들의 기록단계에서 이루어진 다양한 편집의 결과로 해석되어 왔다. 이 논문은 기자들의 편집 결과로 인해 복음서 간에 차이가 발견되는 것을 전면 부정하는 것은 아니지만, 복음서의 상이성을 오로지 혹은 주로 기록단계에서 일어난 것으로 가정하는 경향의 문제점을 지적한다. 예수전승의 기원자인 예수님도, 예수전승의 목격자와 전달자도 기억을 중시하는 구술사회에 살았다는 사실을 진지하게 받아들인다면, 예수전승의 형성과 전달단계에서 파생된 전승 간의 상이성을 간과해서는 안 된다는 것이다. 게다가 기록단계에서 복음서 기자들이 지난 3-40년간 전달된 구두전승을 광범위하게 참조하여 기록 작업에 임했음을 고려한다면 기억과 구술성의 다양한 요인으로 인해 생겨난 상이성이 고스란히 복음서에 스며들어 있다고 추론하는 것은 자연스런 일이다.
따라서 이 논문은 다양한 구술 이론과 기억 이론을 개관한 뒤 복음서의 상이성을 새롭게 해석하는 데 유용한 구술성과 기억의 다양한 요인들을 제시한다. 더 나아가 복음서의 상이성을 해석할 때 편집비평을 즉각사용하기 전에 이러한 요인들을 우선적으로 혹은 최소한 함께 검토할 것을 제안한다.

As Mark Goodacre once pointed out, the Synoptic Problem－the similarities and differences among the Gospels－is explained primarily, if not exclusively, by their ‘literary’ relationships such as source criticism and redaction criticism. However, this may be the result of underestimating different stages of the Jesus tradition. The Jesus tradition went through at least three stages: the formation stage, the transmission stage, and the writing stage. If we take seriously the facts that the first two stages lasted longer than the third stage, that the tradition was preserved and transmitted primarily by mouth and memory, and that many of the oral traditions would be incorporated even in the writing stage, then examining diverse theories of orality and memory are both appropriate and urgent. This article proposes a number of factors of orality and memory through which one can interpret the differences among the Gospels in fresh ways.
Traditionally, the differences among the Gospels have been explained by the results of various redactions done during the writing stage. This article does not completely deny that some of the differences came from the evangelists’ redactional activities. However, this article questions the assumption that all or most of the differences were originated in the writing stage. Jesus himself, the originator of the Jesus tradition, and the eyewitnesses and transmitters of the Jesus tradition all lived in an oral society where oral communication and memory were extensively used. Precisely because of this, we have good reason to believe that many of the differences came from the stages of formation and transmission. Further, if we take seriously the fact that the evangelists used many of the oral traditions even in the writing stage, then it can be safely assumed that many of the differences among the Gospels might be the results of incorporating the oral traditions that were transmitted by mouth and memory.
Consequently, this article explores a number of theories of orality and memory and identifies several factors of orality and memory that may shed new lights on interpreting the differences among the Gospels. In the last analysis, this article argues that these factors of orality and memory should be considered first or at least together before too quickly appealing to redaction criticism.
