『조선문명사』의 조선시대 서술에 대한 비판적 재검토

『Joseon Munmyeongsa』 is an important work that explained the political history of the Joseon Dynasty as a process of internal evolution and development and even showed original insight to set Joseon as a "modern history." However, in this book, Ahn Hwak consistently exposed some problems such as forcibly comparing the East, Joseon with the Western, or adding distorted explanations about institutions and practices of the Joseon Dynasty. This paper acknowledged the contribution of『Joseon Munmyeongsa』, at the same time show reveal limitations and influence analyzing the historians who influenced this his writing. Ahn Hwak was influenced by Yoo Gil-jun, Shin Chae-ho, Liang Qichao and Naito Konon, but the main tone of political history in the Joseon Dynasty was very similar to Naito Konon"s 『A study of China(支那論)』. Naito Konon was a nationalist, a theory of harmony between East and West civilizations centered on Japan, and based on that, he wrote 『A study of China』. Since the Song Dynasty,『A study of China』has been an attempt to supplement and transcend the limits of Western modernity by reinterpreting the Chinese Confucian order since the Song dynasty from the point of view of Japanese Orientalism. This idea seems to be subjective at first glance, but it is conservative and regressive in terms of universal modern civilization that has already been accepted at the stage of Yoo Gil-jun and Shin Chae-ho. This perspective of 『A study of China』was also reflected in『Joseon Munmyeongsa』to a large extent. For this reason,『Joseon Munmyeongsa』tends to be praised the pre-modern Joseon ideology and order by blocking strict criticism. It is necessary to listen to the positive interpretation of Joseon"s central politics and local administration, but should be wary of the attitude that easily sympathizes with unreasonable expansion of concepts or exaggeration or distortion of historical facts.
