캐나다기러기류(White-cheeked Goose, Branta canadensis와 B. hutchinsii)는 형태적인 유사성 때문에 종 또는 아종 구별이 어려워 정확한 도래 실태를 파악하기가 매우 어렵다. 본 연구에서는 지난 27년 동안의 사진자료와 관찰기록을 통해 국내에 도래하는 캐나다기러기의 분포와 아종 현황을 분석하였다. 캐나다기러기는 1992년 첫 관찰 이후 2018년 3월까지 41회의 관찰기록이 있으며, 거의 매년 몇 개체가 관찰되는 매우 드문 겨울철새이다. 한국을 찾는 캐나다기러기(B. hutchinsii) 아종은 leucopareia, minima, taverneri로 확인되었으며, 이 중 minima와 taverneri는 기존에 공식적인 한국조류목록에 포함되지 않은 아종이다. 아종 중 leucopareia가 가장 흔하게 도래하며, 그 다음으로 minima가 찾아오고, taverneri는 매우 드물게 찾아오는 것으로 확인되었다. 본 연구 결과는 한국에 도래하는 캐나다기러기의 아종 구별에 대한 기초자료로 활용될 것으로 판단된다.

The White-cheeked Geese (Canada Goose and Cackling Goose) occupy a wide breeding range and diverse habitats in North America. This species as the most morphologically variable of all anatids is divisible into 11 subspecies that fall into two broad categories on the basis of body size and geographical genetics. Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) and Cackling Goose (B. hutchinsii) are separable from differences in their mitochondrial DNA, but the degree to which the two species overlap geographically and morphologically is poorly understood. The aim of this work was to examine patterns of geographic distribution and variation of White-cheeked Geese overwintering in Korea from 1992 to 2018. Of the White-cheeked Geese, the small-bodied Cackling Geese were overwintered predominantly where at least three subspecies (leucopareia, minima, and taverneri) occupied a wide range in wintering habitats in Korea. However, two subspecies such as minima and taverneri have not been recorded officially. Of the three Cackling Geese subspecies, leucopareia was the dominant form of populations, followed by minima and taverneri. This work provides a preliminary description of the geographic distribution and morphological differences among subspecies of Cackling Geese overwintering in Korea
