이 연구는 20~30대 남성들의 좀 다른 남성성 수행을 근대 남성성과는 다른 변화라고 보고 그 특성과 의미를 하이브리드 남성성의 개념으로 탐색한다. 한국사회에서 근대 남성성은 가장으로서의 생계부양자(경제)와 군인으로서의 국가안보주체자(군사)가 결합된 씩씩한 군사적 남성성이라면, 2000년대 이후에는 부드럽고 스마트한 자기경영자로서의 남성성 담론이 등장한다. 한편으로 분단사회에서 남성만의 병역의무제는 근대적 군사안보 통치와 신자유주의 자기경영주체의 자유 추구 사이에 모순을 일으키며 문화 격차를 내는데, 이 격차는 국가안보의 강한 통치와 더불어 군의 자기계발 정책 안에서 개인의 이익을 확대하는 방식으로 봉합된다. 20~30대 남성들은 근대 남성성을 수행할 수 없는 경제적 조건에서 이와 비판적 거리를 두고, 전통적으로 여성의 일로 간주된 것들을 차용하여 고정된 성별분업을 유연하게 만드는 교섭을 한다. 그래서 그들은 배제를 통해 남성성을 구성하는 근대적 헤게모니 남성성과는 달리, 이질적인 요소들을 혼융하는 하이브리드 남성성을 수행하며 복합성과 유동성, 분열성을 드러낸다. 그래서 이 연구는 포스트근대 남성성의 단서를 특징화하고, 20~30대 남성들의 여성혐오정동만이 아닌 좀 다른 남성성을 수행하는 남성들의 혼종성에 초점을 두어 젠더관계 조정을 위한 저항의 생성 가능성을 열어놓는다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

This study analyzes the hybrid masculinity reconstructed by men in their 20s and 30s, which is different from the modern hegemonic masculinity, and explores its characteristics and meaning in the context of neoliberalism. The masculinity of modern developmental society was characterized as strong militaristic masculinity combined the breadwinner as the head of family with the national security subject as a soldier. In contrast, a soft and smart self-management masculinity has newly emerged since the 2000s in neoliberal society. Besides, the male-only conscription system causes the contradiction between the rule of military security and the pursuit of liberty in neoliberal self-management and makes cultural gap between them. However, this gap is patched up in the way of expanding the individual interest of men within the self-development programs conducted by the military. The men in their 20s and 30s criticize masculinity negatively in economic condition, which is not able to perform modern masculinity, and negotiate with given gender rules for making strict gender division of labor flexible by performing women’s traditional roles. Thus they perform their hybrid masculinities which are charactered as complex, fluidity and ambivalence in contrast to modern hegemonic masculinity constructed through the exclusion of non-hegemonic elements. This study implies that this hybrid masculinity may signal a characteristic of post-modern masculinities and opens up a possibility for changing the gender relations by focusing on the hybridity of young males who perform slightly different masculinities, rather than speak misogyny.
