이 연구는 행복의 젠더 특수성에 주목한다. 여성과 남성의 행복이 조건에 따라 달라진다는 가정에 기반하고 있으며, 행복을 결정하는 대표적 조건인 소득 외에 어떠한 것들이 행복의 젠더 특수성을 구성하는지 파악하고자 했다. 배우자가 있으면서 일하는 1,114명의 대전시민을 대상으로 집단별 차이, 행복과 독립변인들 간 상관관계 분석, 그리고 위계적 회귀분석과 ‘성역할 태도와의 상호작용항’을 추가한 회귀분석 및 단순기울기 검증을 통해 발견한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 행복 정도의 젠더 차이는 없었고, 남성이나 여성 모두 행복을 견인하는 요인들은 같았다. 건강을 위해 비용을 충분히 지출하고, 여가를 즐기며, 폭넓은 사회적 관계를 가지고 있고, 가족들과 교류를 활발히 하는 사람들이 행복했다. 둘째, 성역할 태도는 성별 변인과 상호작용하여 행복감에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 전통적인 성역할 태도를 강하게 가지는 여성이 더 행복할 것으로 예측됐다. 셋째, 전통적 성역할 태도는 여성의 행복감 상승에 크게 영향을 미쳤던 변인인 ‘의지할 수 있는 지인의 충분함’의 영향력을 억제했고, ‘범죄피해 불안감’의 부정적 효과를 강화했다. 단순 기울기 검증 결과, 전통적 성역할 태도를 강하게 가진 여성들은 불안감이 커지면 행복감도 크게 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는, 체제정당화이론에 따르면, 여성들이 현재 젠더 불평등한 사회에 살고 있음을 반증한다. 또한, 행복하기 위해 필요했던 태도가 나를 행복하게 만들 수 있는 행위들을 위축시키고 더욱 불안하게 만들어 결국 불행해진다는 여성의 모순적인 현실을 드러낸다.

The main purpose of the present study is first to examine the happiness profile of the economically active citizens living in Daejeon with partners and gender differences in happiness, utilizing different aspects of life. This study mostly investigates the correlations of socio-demographic and other factors with happiness and, where (or when) possible, their independent and causal effects. Specifically, this study focuses on the effects of ‘gender role attitude’ and its interactions with other factors as a moderator. Results reveals that there is no gender differences in the amount of happiness. Regardless of gender, people are more likely to be happy when they are satisfied with leisure time, family relations, health expenditure and social networking. However, traditional gender role attitude is highly correlated with positive effect of increasing happiness especially for women. This study finds that happiness is moderated by the degree of ‘gender role attitude’ for women. Traditional gender role attitude moderates the effects of social networking and anxiety about crimes. Simple slopes analysis reveals that there is significant relationships between social networking, anxiety about crimes and happiness for women. Ironically and sadly, there is the endorsement of justifications of gender inequality is inversely related to happiness. The central argument is that the strategy for being happy hinders women from understanding properly the nature of oppression.
