This paper examines the narrative of Yang In-gwang, a son-in-law of Jo Moo who is a member of the main family, and points out its characteristics and meanings. The classical full-length Korean novel Three Generations of the Jo Family (Jossisamdaerok) is a sequel to A Dream of Two Dragons (Hyeonmong ssangnyonggi) and presumed to have been written some time in the 18th century. The main characters of the series are the Jo family, but the Yang family accounts for a large portion of the content in both the former and the latter volume. Yang Se is the father of Yang In-gwang and the older brother of Yang Ok-seol, the first wife of Jo Seong. He was jealous of his younger sister, rebelled against his father, and was executed for the crime of being a traitor to the country. Yang In-gwang, his son, was described as a heroic figure with excellent qualifications and both literary and martial arts in the Three Generations of the Jo Family. However, he had the limit of being descended from a deficient family, and was described as a rather lightweight and shameless person. He became Jo Wol-yeom’s husband. The conflicts in the marriage process and post-marriage marital conflicts made the narrative more interesting. By showing negative aspects, such as not seeing through an evil woman’s plot and persecuting his good wife, he gave the story a different tension than the characters of the main family. In the derivative novel, The Loyalty and Righteousness of the Yang Family (Yangmun chunguirok), he was partially liberated from the stigma of being the son of his father, who died on the charge of being a bad son and a traitor.

이 글에서는 <조씨삼대록>의 주동 가문인 조무의 사위 양인광과 관련된 서사를 고찰하여 그 특징과 의미를 짚어보았다. <조씨삼대록>은 <현몽쌍룡기>의 후편으로 조씨 가문의 삼대(三代)에 걸친 이야기를 중심으로 펼쳐지는 18세기 무렵의 국문장편소설이다. 쌍둥이 형제 조무와 조성의 이야기가 <현몽쌍룡기>의 중심을 이루고, 그 자손의 이야기는 <조씨삼대록>의 중심을 이룬다. 이 연작의 주인공은 조씨 가문이지만 큰 비중으로 등장하는 가문이 바로 양씨 가문이다. 조성의 첫째 부인 양옥설의 오빠가 양인광의 아버지인 양세이다. 그는 성품이 포악하고 누이를 질투하여 부모와 누이에게 온갖 악행을 저지르다가 역적과 한 패라는 죄를 입어 처형된 인물이다. 하지만 아들 인광은 <조씨삼대록>에서 문무겸전하고 훌륭한 재질을 지닌 호걸형 인물로 묘사되었다. 그는 조무의 딸 월염의 남편이 되는데, 비정상적인 혼인과정, 혼인한 후의 부부갈등을 만들어내면서 서사의 흥미를 강화시켰다. 악한 여성의 음모를 알아차리지 못하고 선한 아내를 핍박하기도 하는 등 부정적인 면을 보여주면서 주동 가문의 주인공들과는 다른 재미를 주었다. 불효자, 반역자라는 죄명으로 죽은 아버지의 굴레는 <조씨삼대록>의 파생작인 <양문충의록>의 마지막에서야 일부 극복된다. 자신의 평생의 공적들을 역사에서 지우는 대신 아버지의 죄도 지워달라는 유언으로 가문의 위상을 회복하고자 하였다. 이러한 파생작의 존재는 이 특별한 인물에 대한 독자들의 동정과 새로운 서사에 대한 관심에서 비롯되었을 듯하다.
