This paper investigates aspects of funeral oration in the Samdaerok of Korean Novels, and analyzes funeral orations for male characters to investigate which virtues and characteristics of male characters were praised. In So-ssi-samdaerok and Jo-ssi-samdaerok there were funeral orations for the concubines of the main characters fathers, and in Hyun-mong-ssang-ryong-gi there were funeral orations for the wives of the main characters. These funeral orations praise the women’s daily lives and good deeds, and express deep sorrow. In comparison, funeral orations for male characters such as Jin Gong in Yu-ssi-samdaerok and Cho Gong in Jo-ssi-samdaerok illustrate their talents, personalities, characteristics and walk of life in detail. Thus, Jin Gong has an image of a male who is good and loyal to his parents, magnanimous, virile and smart, and loves learning. Cho Gong has an image of a male who is considerate, impressible, incorrupt and modest, and has foresight and spirituality. The fact that these two male characters’ talents are both similar and different is related to the direction and the atmosphere of the whole narration of each novel. In Jo-ssi-samdaerok, Cho Gong does not have a character flaw, so his wife does not suffer from him but suffers from persecution by other bad men, while in Yu-ssi-samdaerok Jin Gong is vigorous and easily carried away by his emotions, so Princess Jinyang, who is a holy woman, suffers inner conflicts and ends her life in unhappiness.

본고에서는 삼대록계 국문장편소설에 삽입된 제문의 양상을 살핀 뒤, 그 중 남성 인물에 대한 제문을 분석함으로써 그들의 어떤 덕목과 특성이 바람직하다고 칭송되었는지를 고찰하였다. ｢소씨삼대록｣, ｢조씨삼대록｣에는 주인공의 서모들의 제문이 들어 있었고, ｢유씨삼대록｣, ｢현몽쌍룡기｣에는 주인공 아내인 진양공주, 양정렬의 제문이 들어 있었다. 여기서는 주로 그녀들의 일상과 선행을 칭찬하면서 슬픈 마음을 가눌 수 없음을 토로하였다. 이에 비해, 남성 인물에 대한 제문에서는 ｢유씨삼대록｣의 진공, ｢조씨삼대록｣의 초공 모두 그들의 자질, 품성, 특성, 행적 등을 자세하게 서술하고 있었다. 그래서 진공은 효도하고 충성하면서도 호탕하고 웅건한 성품을 지녔고 총명하고 학문을 좋아하는 남성상이었음이, 초공은 자상하고 감성적이면서도 예지력과 영험함, 청렴함과 겸손함을 지닌 남성상이었음이 드러났다. 두 작품 모두 형제 중에서 비중이 더 큰 인물의 성품에 대한 품평이 잦았고 제문도 그들을 위해서만 지어졌다. 하지만 두 남성의 자질은 비슷하면서도 달랐는데, 이것이 작품 전체 서사의 방향과 분위기와 관련되어 있었다.
