초록

This study would conduct a comparative study of the intimacy relation and the relationship between subordinates and superiors in Korean and Japanese honorifics toward the third person appearing in the same situations. As the research subjects, this study would investigate and analyze the usages of honorifics toward the third person in Korea and Japan in the Korean script of Korean TV Drama (KBS2) Winter Sonata and the script translated into Japanese, “冬のソナタ” to conduct an empirical comparative study of the awareness of honorifics toward the third person according to the intimacy relation and relationship between subordinates and superiors. Through the empirical case study appearing in real life, this study could understand differences and commonalities in the systematic and detailed intimacy relation and the relationship between subordinates and superiors in Korean and Japanese honorifics toward the third person and could further investigate the awareness of changes in Korean and Japanese honorifics toward the third person. The usages of honorifics toward the third person (33) ‘when the person in the topic in an ambiguous intimacy relation neither belongs to the subject of a talk nor the listener’ are 31% of the entire usages (109). The usages that fall under the case of ‘the speaker and the third person being in a similar position in the relationship between subordinates and superiors’ (11) are 33% of the usages that fall under the case of ‘the person in the topic in an ambiguous intimacy relation belonging neither to the subject of a talk nor the listener (33).’ This shows that in both Korea and Japan, expressions of honorifics toward the third person are used much even when the intimacy relation and the relationship between subordinates and superiors are ambiguous. The results of the discussion on honorifics toward the third person, which appear in specific usages in Korean and Japanese, are as follows 1) Even friends express a psychological distance with polite language. This shows that it is shown with the polite language, being conscious of the psychological distance with the listener, even if the speaker and listener are in a similar relationship between subordinates and superiors. This is a specific usage of the awareness of intimacy relation in Japanese honorifics toward the third person. 2) Even sarcastic meanings are expressed in normal words in Korean while they are expressed with a polite language, ‘お+vocabulary’ though not the direct honorifics toward the third person in Japanese. 3) When the speaker, listener, and the subject of a topic (superior to the listener) are all in a family relationship, the speaker uses honorifics toward the third person in Korean while expressions are made with normal words in Japanese. This shows the tendency of the Japanese language that attaches importance to intimacy rather than to the relationship between subordinates and superiors.
