본 연구의 목적은 일본의 지리학자 나가쿠보 세키스이(長久保赤水, 이하 세키스이)가 제작한 「개정일본여지노정전도(改正日本與地路程全圖)」(이하 「개정일본여지노정전도」)의 제작배경을 살펴보고, 이 지도가 독도영유권에 있어 지니는 가치를 논하는 것이다. 이를 위해 세키스이가 살았던 시대상과 그의 생애, 세키스이와 지도제작, 그리고 본 연구의 주제인 「개정일본여지노정전도」가 지도제작사적으로 지니는 위상과 그 판본들, 독도영유권 관련하여 「개정일본여지노정전도」를 둘러싼 한일 간의 갈등양상을 알아보았다. 나아가 이러한 갈등과 「개정일본여지노정전도」가 독도영유권에 있어 지니는 가치에 대해 비판적으로 검토하였다. 일본에서 지도학적으로 높은 위상을 지니고 대중적 인기를 누렸으며 독도영유권과 관련하여 일본 외무성 홈페이지에 제시되고 있는 「개정일본여지노정전도」에 대해 지리학적으로 살펴보는 것은 독도영유권에 있어 지니는 의미가 크다고 할 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the making of Kaisei Nihon Yochirotei Zenzu (「改正日本與地路 程全圖」), which was produced by Nagakubo Sekisui (長久保赤水), a Japanese geographer, and to discuss the significance of this map in the controversy over Dokdo islands. To this end, this study looked into the situation of the times in which he lived, his life, and his map making, and the status of Kaisei Nihon Yochirotei Zenzu, which is the subject of this study, in the history of cartography, several versions of this map, and the conflict between Korea and Japan surrounding this map with respect to Dokdo. Furthermore, these conflicts and the significance of this map in the sovereignty of Dokdo have been critically examined. The geographical approach to this map, which has a high cartographic status in Japan, had gained popularity, and is presented on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan regarding Dokdo, can represent much to the sovereignty of Dokdo.
