본 논문의 목적은 기호이데올로기 개념을 소개하고 “지속가능성” 담론의 문화적 번역 사례를 통해 기호이데올로기 개념이 어떻게 인류학과 기호학의 교차점과 생산적 교류를 드러내는지 살펴보는 데 있다. 최근 언어/기호/문화인류학 연구에서 등장하고 있는 기호이데올로기는 언어이데올로기 개념과 맞닿아 있다. 언어이데올로기는 언어사용자가 언어와 언어사용에 관해 지니는 관념과 믿음, 그리고 유사하게 현재 기호이데올로기는 기호 사용자가 갖는 기호와 기호사용에 대한 관념과 믿음으로 설명된다. 본 논문은 기호이데올로기의 등장을 언어인류학자 실버스틴의 언어이데올로기 개념화에서 찾고, 민족지적 조사를 통해 수집된 하와이에서의 지속가능성 담론의 문화적 전환(transduction)사례를 사용, 의미가 지표성을 해석하는 기호이데올로기의 매개로 인해 편향성을 가질 수 있음을 밝힌다. 기호이데올로기는 기호를 둘러싼 담론의 메타기호학적 구성에 함의돼 의미를 매개할 수 있고, 따라서 기호 층위와 담론 순환의 사회적 층위를 연결하는 기능을 가질 수 있는 것이다. 기호와 대상적 의미의 사회문화적구성, 즉 사회 층위의 문화적 세미오시스(cultural semiosis)를 분석하는 사례를 제공, 본 논의는 기호이데올로기가 기호학과 인류학 융합의 생산성을 보여줄 지점임을 보이고 더 나아가 퍼스 기호학이 인지와 정신의 탐구에 국한되는 것이 아니라 인간과 사회, 그리고 문화의 폭넓은 경험적 분석에 개념적 도구와 방법론적 틀을 제공함을 드러낸다.

The purpose of this research is to introduce semiotic ideology and to Korean anthropology and semiotics and to explore how empirical researches using this concept can help bridge anthropology and semiotics and shed light on their intersection(s). The concept of semiotic ideology builds upon the concept of language ideology. Language ideology is understood as the various ideas and beliefs people hold about language and language use and likewise, currently, semiotic ideology is used to discuss the ideas and beliefs people hold about signs and sign use. Using fieldwork data gathered ethnographically on the semiotic translation or transduction of the discourse of “sustainability” in Hawai‘i, this paper traces the linguistic anthropological development of the concept, analyzes how semiotic ideologies discursively mediate as well as orient indexical meaning-making and sensemaking, and argue that the concept helps to distinguish and thus associate the planes of sign and society. The concept of semiotic ideology helps to demystify the process whereby cultural semiosis occurs in relation to society, providing opportunities for scholarly dialogue and collaboration between semiotics and anthropology.
