Abstract

Fission-track ages of zircons from five volcanic rocks and one pyroclastic flow deposit in the Yaeyama area, Kagoshima Prefecture, were determined. The Iriki pyroxene andesite yielded two different ages (2.6±0.4 m. y. and 1.8±0.4 m. y.); both agree well with the paleomagnetic results of Takai (1981). The fission-track ages of the Okoba rhyolite, pyroclastic flow 1 in the Nagano formation, and the Iwashita andesite are 2.5±0.4 m. y., 1.7±0.5 m. y., and 1.2±0.3 m. y. to 1.4±0.3 m. y., respectively. A good correlation between age and magnetostratigraphy is obtained from these results.
