HPV genotypes in precancerous cervical lesions: histological and biomolecular investigations in the Sicilian area, Italy

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to describe prevalence of Human papilloma viral genotypes in the different groups of woman population in Sicilian area.
METHODS: One hundred twenty-four biopsies of the portio were analyzed at Laboratory of Anatomic Pathology in Sant’Elia Hospital in Caltanissetta, Southern Italy, between January 2010 and December 2010 with follow-up until December 2012. The histologically nomenclature used to describe the precancerous conditions of the uterine cervix is Intraepithelial Cervical Neoplasia (CIN). We analyzed HPV genotypes in cervical biopsies with the LINEAR ARRAY HPV genotyping test. The test allows the determination of 37 HPV genotypes and is also performed on groups of 18 samples.
RESULTS: The HPV-16 genotype showed the highest prevalence in 29.8% (37/124) cases, followed by HPV-42 in 16.9% (21/124), HPV-53 in 10.4% (13/124). Seventy-nine percent (98/124) of patients exhibited high risk genotype (HR-HPV). In 31.2% (34/109) of CIN1 there is the HPV-16 genotype isolated or in association with multiple infections but always in combination with HR-HPV. All cases of CIN3 presented only HR-HPV.
CONCLUSIONS: As in most parts of the world we observed that HPV 16 is the most commonly involved HPV genotype in women. The present study emphasizes that screening in the our geographical area is an important tool to prevent malignant HPV-correlated injuries that can evolve into cervical cancer.
