주거지 내부에서 조사되고 있는 부뚜막시설은 이전의 주거지에서 나타나는노지시설과는 그 구조 및 활용방법에서 많은 차이를 보이는 구조물로 다양한 문화의 변화를 살펴볼 수 있는 자료이다.
한반도 중부지역 부뚜막시설 주거지는 발굴자료의 증가와 함께 구조적․지역적 특징과 함께 전개양상, 출자문제에 대한 연구가 많은 부분에서 진행되어 오고있다. 그러나 지금까지의 연구에서는 주거지의 평면형태와 구조적인 차이, 그리고출토유물의 비교를 통하여 이러한 차이가 시간적인 선후관계로 설명되고 있다.
본 연구에서는 한반도 중부지역에서 조사된 부뚜막시설 주거지를 평면형태의차이를 통하여 6가지로 분류하고, 각각의 주거지가 유적 내에서 분포하는 양상과출토유물의 비교 검토를 통하여 시간적 변화 외에 공간적․문화적 차이를 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 주거지의 평면형태와 구조의 차이가 시간적인 변화만을 나타내는 것이 아니라 집단간의 점유공간의 차이와 계층간의 차이도 나타내는 것을확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 문헌자료를 검토하여 주거지의 변화가 보여주는 의미를 확인할 수 있었다.
