AB - The purpose of this paper is to analyze and find the identity of the Islamic State (IS) described in the remarks delivered by the IS caliph Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. It also studies the concrete roadmap of the IS for realizing its goal. The identity of the IS is shown in the four remarks given by al-Baghdadi in June 2014, November 2014, May 2015 and December 2015. Analysis on these speeches revels two features of the IS, the Sumnni Islam and Mujahideen. The future goal of the IS shown in the remarks is the “establishment of an Islamic caliphate.” To accomplish this goal, in his speeches, al-Baghdadi encourages the hijra (migration), establishment of an Islamic community, jihad and destruction of idols as well as expansion of territory. Although his remarks repeatedly touch upon the aforementioned identity and goal, they also focus on specific issues considering then-surrounding circumstances. In this light, analysis on these speeches can be useful source for studying the circumstance of the IS in detail. This paper, therefore, aims to find measures taken by the IS to accomplish its goal by translating and analyzing the texts of al-Baghdadi's remarks, thereby studying the identity of the IS and sub-categorizing the remarks by theme.

초록
