초록

이 논문은 1930년대 영국의 ‘영국 파시스트 연합(BUF)’과 프랑스의 ‘불의 십자가(CF)’를 사례로 양국의 파시즘을 고찰한다. 논문의 목표는 양국 파시즘을 비교하는 것이 아니라 양국 파시즘이 합의 학파가 제시한 ‘일반적 개념으로서의 파시즘’에 대해 갖는 함의를 도출하는 것으로 국한한다. 주요 쟁점은 세 가지이다. 첫째, 양국에서 파시즘은 이식된 현상인가, 자생적 현상인가? 둘째, 양국에서 파시즘은 우파적 현상인가, 좌파적 현상인가? 셋째, 양국 파시즘을 카테고리로 볼 것인가, 스펙트럼으로 볼 것인가? 일단 BUF와 CF의 사례는 양국 파시즘이 국제적 차원의 “파시즘의 자장”의 영향을 받으면서도 동시에 토착적･민족적 성격을 띠며 발전했음을 보여 준다. 또한 파시즘은 우파도 아니고 좌파도 아니라기보다는 우파이면서 동시에 좌파의 성격을 띠고 있었다. 끝으로 파시즘은 카테고리 상으로 명확히 구별되기보다는 우파에서 좌파로 연속되는 폭넓은 정치적 스펙트럼 속에서 식별된다. 이로부터 ‘일반적 개념으로서의 파시즘’에 대한 합의 학파의 정의가 전제하고 있는 파시즘의 고정된 ‘본성’을 상정하기보다는 파시즘을 변화하는 ‘과정’과 ‘관계’ 속에서 파악하는 작업이 필요하다고 생각된다.
