The To cope with the ever-increasing environmental regulations, Korean emission trading scheme (KETS) has been established based on a market mechanism in 2015. In order to operate the KETS efficiently and reduce the marginal abatement cost of firms, it is essential to analyze the main factors affecting carbon emissions and design valid policies for industries. This study investigates the potential factors affecting carbon emissions and examines the relationship between innovation activity such as R&D investment and emissions based on food and beverage firm-level data participating in the Korean Emission Trading Scheme (KETS). The results show that carbon emissions from food and beverage industry has not influenced by innovation activity. The rapid technological progress in the food and beverage industry is related to improving the efficiency of products and production processes rather than developing technologies to carbon emissions. Therefore, it is concluded that innovation activities in this industry have no statistically significant effect on carbon emission reductions. On the other hand, it is confirmed that carbon intensity and energy intensity impact on carbon emissions at the 5% significance leve
