Effect of Colleage Students’ Low Effortful Control on Smartphone Addiction Tendency During COVID-19 Period: Testing Depression as a Mediator

Abstract
본 연구는 COVID 19 시기 대학생의 낮은 의도적 통제와 스마트폰 중독 경향성 간의 관계에 우울이 매개적 역할을 하는지를 밝히고자 하였다. 이를 위해 서울 및 충청 지역의 307명의 대학생(남학생 86명, 여학생 221명)을 대상으로 자료를 수집하여 분석하였다. 분석 결과 대학생의 낮은 의도적 통제는 스마트폰 중독 경향성에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 낮은 의도적 통제는 대학생의 우울에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 우울이 스마트폰 중독 경향성에 영향을 미치지는 않는 것으로 나타났으며, 대학생의 낮은 의도적 통제가 스마트폰 중독에 영향을 미치는 과정의 우울의 매개효과 역시 나타나지 않았다. 이와 관련하여 대학생의 스마트폰 중독 경향성을 예방하기 위한 방안으로 대학생의 의도적 통제에 초점을 둔 중재의 방안이 논의되었다.
The aim of the study is to examine the effect of university students’ low effortful control on smartphone addiction tendency during COVID-19 period, focusing on the mediating role that depression may play in the relationship between university students’ low effortful control and smartphone addiction tendency. The participants are 307 university students (86 male, 221 female) from Seoul and Chungcheong Province. The participants completed self-report questionnaires on temperamental effortful control and on depression and smartphone addiction tendency. Results are as follows: First, colleage students’ low effortful control effect on depression. Second, colleage students’ low effortful control effect on smartphone addiction tendency. Third, colleage students’ low effortful control did not effect on smartphone addiction tendency. Forth, data from the mediation model showed that depression did not mediated the relationship between low effortful control and smartphone addiction tendency. Regarding this, to prevent college students’ tendency of smartphone addiction, an intervention plan focusing on effortful control was discussed.
