재난 영화에 드러난 홍수 설화의 서사 전략 연구

A Study of the Narrative Strategy of the “Flood Folktale,” as Revealed in Disaster Movies

본 연구는 설화의 서사 전략이 현대의 영상 서사에도 작용하고 있음을 드러내고, 이를 분석하여 설화의 견고한 서사가 갖는 현재적 효용에 대해 논의하였다. 일련의 논의를 통해 <대홍수와 목도령>의 홍수로 인한 혼돈, 인간의 극복, 새질서의 창립이라는 서사 전개의 전형성을 현대의 아포칼립스 콘텐츠에서도 발견할 수 있음을 논의하였다. 재난 아포칼립스 콘텐츠인 <설국열차>, 좀비 아포칼립스 콘텐츠인 <부산행>, SF 아포칼립스 콘텐츠인 <블레이드 러너>를 두루 살핀 결과, 재난의 종류나 크기, 이에 따라 새질서의 성격을 달리하는 변이가 있으나, 홍수 설화의 전형적인 서사 전개에서 크게 벗어나지는 않음을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 인간의 능력과 가치에 대한 관심과 옹호를 보여주고 있는 점을 설화와 재난 영상 서사에서 공통적으로 발견할 수 있었다. 그러면서도 서사마다 시대적 변화에 따른 개성적 메시지가 구체화되고 있음을 또한 확인할 수 있었다. 재난의 원인, 선한 마음의 발휘, 새 질서의 구축과 같은 설화의 대목이 신자유주의 시대의 계급 갈등, 바이러스의 창궐, 미래 사회 인류의 가치와 행방 등으로 시대 정신에 맞게 변용되어 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이와 같은 논의를 통해 아포칼립스 콘텐츠와의 비교를 통해 홍수 설화가 현재에도 여전히 유효함을, 나아가 구비 서사가 현대의 문화적 산물들을 이해하는 기제로 활용될 수 있음을 확인하였다는 것에 논의의 의의가 있다. 또한 생소한 작품 간 관계를 마련하고 해석하는 논의를 통해 설화에 대한 더 나은 이해를 도모했다고 할 것이다. 좀 더 다양한 형식의 콘텐츠를 동원하고, 나아가 다른 여러 설화와 현대 문화 간의 관련성에 대한 연구도 연속적으로 진행할 수 있을 것이다.

The present study shows that the narrative strategy of folktales continues to work in modern movies. This paper analyzes the folktales and discusses the current utility of their solid narrative. Through a series of discussions, it has emerged that the typical narrative-structure development of “The Flood,” “Overcoming Humans,” and “Foundation of a New Order” can be found in modern apocalyptic content. Disaster-apocalypse content <Snowpiercer>, zombie-apocalypse content <Train To Busan>, and SF apocalypse content <Blade Runner> have been examined. This investigation confirmed that, with some variations, these film scripts did not deviate significantly from the typical narrative development of the flood story. In addition, key moments that focus on and promote human abilities and values can be found in both folktales and disaster-video narratives. At the same time, individual messages are embodied in each narrative, while abstract passages in the tale, involving, for example, “the cause of the disaster,” “exhibiting a good mind,“ and “building a new order” have been transformed in more specific ways. This discussion is meaningful because it confirms that the flood story is still valid today, as a comparison with apocalyptic film content makes clear. Furthermore, it is relevant to discuss the fact that oral narratives can be used as a mechanism for understanding contemporary cultural products.
