본 연구는 노년기 자살생각과 관련해서 기존 연구들에서 많이 다루어지지 않은 사회자본이 우울을 매개로 자살생각에 미치는 영향을 파악하는데 목적이 있다. 본 연구에서는 한국복지패널(KOWEPS) 2012년도 자료에서 65세 이상 노인 3,524명을 경로분석을 활용하여 분석하였다. 분석결과 첫째, 사회자본 변수들이 우울에 미치는 직접효과는 모두 유의한 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 신뢰와 가족관계 만족도가 높을수록 자살생각이 유의미하게 낮아지는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 사회자본 변수들과 자살생각과의 관계에 있어서 우울은 유의미한 매개요인으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과를 기반으로 하여 노인의 자살생각을 줄이기 위한 사회자본의 역할에 대하여 논의하였다.

This study aims to identify the impact of social capital, which has been rarely discussed in previous studies, on suicidal ideation in old age and to examine the mediating effects of depression between them. This study utilized the 2012 data from Korean Welfare Panel Study (KOWEPS) including a total of 3,524 samples aged 65 and over. Path analysis was used for data analyses. Results showed that first the direct impacts of all social capital variables on depression were all significant. Second, more social trust and satisfaction from family relationships help lower the risk of suicidal ideation. Third, the relationships between social capital variables and suicidal ideation were all significantly mediated through depression. Based on the results from this study, we discussed the role of social capital in terms of reducing older people’s suicidal ideation.
