이 연구는 영어에서 담화 참여자들의 상호 관계를 나타내는 호칭어와 지칭어의 사용 양상을 확인하고 공손성이 어떻게 실현되는지 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 호칭어에 관한 많은 연구가 기능과 유형, 번역에서의 문제점을 중심으로 연구되어왔다. 다양한 언어 요소들로 표현되는 상호 관계는 친밀함과 격식의 정도가 있는 공손성과 체면으로 분석할 수 있다. 언어 자원(COCA, COHA, SOAP)을 통해 호칭어/지칭어의 사용 양상을 확인하고 문맥 내에서 사용된 타이틀 단어로 공손성이 어떻게 지켜지는지 살펴본다. 위계 관계에 따라 거리를 유지하기 위해 여러 형태의 타이틀이 사용된다. 직업 타이틀의 경우 화자와 청자의 거리뿐만 아니라 힘과 유대감에 따라 다른 공손전략으로 분석될 수 있다. 향후 연구에서 공손전략의 다양한 유형을 살펴보도록 한다.

This study examines the use of English address and reference terms and understands the expressions of their mutual relationships between interlocutors. Many studies have been focused on functions, types, and problems in translation. The interrelationship can be analyzed with politeness and face. This study examines how politeness of title terms are used in COCA, COHA, and SOAP. The title is used in several forms to maintain distance with respect to the hierarchical relationship. Various politeness strategies for using job titles are analyzed based on power and solidarity. Future studies will consider various types of politeness strategies.
