This paper attempted to study the awakening of Joseph, the protagonist of Saul Bellow’s Dangling Man, by applying Gilles Deleuze’s new concept of simulacre. Deleuze reinterpreted the concept of Plato’s phantasma as simulacre. It is away from the essence and is worthless, but it allows the creation of differentiation from the essence as a free concept. Thus Deleuze’s simulacre reveals the false image of concealing the truth and claims that the revealed false image can make the truth more realistic. This is a paradoxical figure of simulacre. Joseph experiences simulacre conceptualized by Deleuze. He finds out that the ideals he has built through his spiritual colony of badly transformed friends are fictitious. The cruel party that his friends showed was distorted simulacre, but it is manifested by Joseph’s awakening to reality. It transforms the differentiation from the essence that can lead to negative perception to becoming. This study is significant in analyzing Deleuze’s concept of simulacre and its paradoxical meaning as Joseph’s awakening.
