본 연구는 Tim O`Brien이 The Things They Carried라는 소설에서 포스트 모더니티와 관련된 절제된 아이러니를 통하여 전쟁의 매력을 반박하기 위하여 대위법(Counterpoint)을 제시한 것을 묘사하고자 한다. 베트남 전쟁의 기억을 통하여, 저자는 핵심적인 이슈와 투쟁하는 서로 다른 특징을 가진 인물들을 소개하면서, 미묘한 변화를 야기하는 전쟁의 매혹적인 매력들에 대하여 반박하고 있다. 저자는 대위법(Counterpoint)을 통하여 전쟁에 대한 개인인식 문화 비판(Self-Conscious Cultural Criticism)을 설명한다. 즉 저자는 그가 개인인식 문화 비판(Self-Conscious Cultural Criticism)이라고 주장하는 포스트 모던 대항담론(Postmodern Counternarratives)을 통하여 독자들에게 전쟁에 대한 혐오(hate)를 촉구하고 있다. 이렇게 함으로서, 저자는 사실과 소설 사이의 영역을 흐릿하게 할 수 있다고 주장한다. 그는 개인적인 아이러니(Private Irony)를 통하여 전쟁을 동물적인 표상으로 묘사하고 있다. 요약하면, 본 논문은 Tim O`Brien이 The Things They Carried라는 소설에서 제기한 개인적인 아이러니(Private Irony)에 대하여 네팔인의 관점에서 소개하고자 한다.

This study attempts to narrate that O`Brien"s The Things They Carried offers a counterpoint to refute the allure of war through the use of low-keyed irony associated with the postmodernity. Through memories of the Vietnam War, the author refutes the seductive allure of war to which causes subtle variations as he introduces different characters that struggle with the core issue. He explains a self-aware criticism on the war according to the counterpart. He encourages readers to hate war through the use of postmodern counternarratives, in which he asserts self-conscious cultural criticism. In doing so, he argued that it is able to blur the boundary between fact and fiction. He depicts war as the manifestation of animalism, through the use of private irony. To sum up, this article attempts to introduce the private irony propounding in The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, from Nepalese Perspective.
