EXPLORATION OF PARENTS APPREHENSIONS ABOUT EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THEIR CHILDREN IN EVER CHANGING DIGITAL WORLD Author(s): Saba Khurshid ,Hafsa Khalil Toor, Tanvir Akhtar J. Ponte - Apr 2020 - Volume 76 - Issue 4 doi: 10.21506/j.ponte.2020.4.18 Abstract: Children are spending most of their time in the world which is dominated by digital devices or gadgets such as iPads, iPhones, computer screens, and TVs, Parents apprehensions and fears are also increasing. The purpose of present study is to explore the parents apprehensions regarding their children social and emotional development due to increase in screen time. Three independent focus group discussions were carried out with parents to gain in depth understanding. Focus group guide was developed on the basis of literature and suggestions by subject matter experts,. Following the ethical consideration, focus group discussions were audio taped and transcribed. Content analysis was carried out to emerge the themes of the discussion. For precision and accuracy, the themes were then analyzed by two independent raters. Inter-rater reliability was assessed for the theme which was found to be substantial. The major themes that were identified by the present study were that excessive use of technology is affecting children emotional, social development and also leading them to inactive life style. On the other hand, technology can expand their vision if it is properly use for educational and constructive purpose. It is recommended that healthy home environment and good quality time can reduce the excessive screen time in children.
