본고에서는 박영한 작 「머나먼 쏭바강」의 개작 과정의 양상과 의미를 살피고 각 판본의 의의와 해석상의 문제를 짚어보았다. 「머나먼 쏭바강」은 베트남전쟁 소설을 다룬 연구에서 빈번히 논의의 출발점으로 삼게 되는 중요한 작품임에도 불구하고 작품에 대한 기초 연구 자체가 부족한 형편이다. 이에 본고에서는 「머나먼 쏭바강」이 몇 차례 개작을 거쳤다는 데 주목하여, 이에 대한 실증적 조사와 분석을 진행함으로써 정밀한 작품 해석을 위한 기본 근거를 확보하고자 하였다. 중편에서 장편으로의 개작 과정에서 작업의 기본 방향은 ‘추가’이다. 사건 전개에는 변화가 거의 없는 반면 인물성격화에서는 인물 내면의 깊이를 확보하는 방향으로 상당한 변화가 이루어졌다. 사건의 변화보다는 제시된 상황의 생생함을 증가시키고 인물의 관점과 처지에 정서적 이입을 유도하는 방향으로 개작되었다. 1978년판에서 1992년판으로의 개작에서는 주로 ‘삭제’가 이루어졌다. 특히 남베트남 정치 비판이나 베트남 현실에 관한 묘사 등 베트남전쟁이라는 역사적 사건을 어떻게 바라볼 것인지에 관한 내용이 대거 삭제되었으며 이는 「머나먼 쏭바강」과 「인간의 새벽」을 하나로 통합하는 작업의 결과임을 논증하였다. 이러한 개작 과정을 살핀 결과 각 판본이 지닌 의의를 파악할 수 있었다. 중편은 창작 과정에서 작가가 지녔던 생각을 유추할 수 있는 통로로서 의의가 있다. 1978년판은 베트남 체험의 생생한 소설적 형상화로서 의의가 있으며 1970년대라는 제한된 상황적 한계 내에서 현실 인식을 위한 노력이 주목된다. 1992년판에서는 감상성의 강조가 두드러지며, 이는 1부에서는 두 사람의 사랑 이야기를, 2부에서는 현실의 문제를 다루겠다는 작가의 의도가 반영된 결과로 파악된다. 이와 같은 개작 과정의 검토를 통해 작가의 관심사와 의도, 작품의 변모 양상 등을 파악함으로써 작품 해석에 참고할 다양한 기초 정보를 확보할 수 있었다.
This paper examines the aspects and meanings of the adaptation of “The Faraway Ssongba River” by Park Yeong-han, and points out the significance and interpretation problems of each edition. Despite the fact that “The Faraway Ssongba River” is an important work that is often used as a starting point for discussion in research on Vietnam War novels, there is a lack of basic research on the work itself. Therefore, this paper focuses on the fact that “The Faraway Ssongba River” has been adapted several times, and attempts to obtain a basic basis for a precise interpretation of the work by conducting an empirical investigation and analysis of the adaptations. The basic method used in the process of adapting from a med-length novel to a full-length novel is 'addition'. While there were few changes to the plot, there were significant changes to the characterization to ensure the depth of the characters' inner states of mind. Rather than changing the events, it was adapted to increase the vividness of the presented situation and induce emotional involvement in the characters' perspectives and situations. In adaptations from the 1978 edition to the 1992 edition, 'deletion' is often used. In particular, a lot of the content about how to view the historical event of the Vietnam War, such as political criticism and depictions of the reality of Vietnam, was removed, and it was confirmed that this was part of the effort to unify “The Faraway Ssongba River” and “The Human Daybreak”. By examining these adaptations, the significance of each edition can be understood. An edition of a medium-length novel is significant as a medium for inferring the author's thoughts during the creative process. The 1978 edition is significant as a vivid fictionalization of the Vietnam experience, and its efforts to recognize reality within the limited context of the 1970s are noteworthy. In the 1992 edition, sentimentality is emphasized, which is understood to be the result of the author's intention to focus on a love story in the first part and a realistic representation and criticism of war in the second part. Through this research on adaptations, this thesis was able to identify the artist's interests and intentions, as well as how the work was transformed, providing a variety of basic information for interpretation.
