초록

After the Scientific Revolution, natural science has continuously increased its influence toward the outside of its area, and become the criterion of pursuing knowledge and evaluating the value. Last three centuries Christianity has tried to keep its territory from the scientific invasion with proclaiming two different areas between religion and science. However, recently Christianity deeply involves in the dialogue with natural sciences. This study aims to examine the current geography of religion-science discourses presented from Christian theologians: John Haught, a Catholic and American theologian, and Wolfhart Pannenberg, a Protestant and German theologian. To achieved the goal, this article consists of two main sections with introduction and conclusion. The second section surveys some factors of the recent changing geography of religion and science dialogues. It deals with influences of “The Scientific Perspectives on Divine Action” program launched by Roman Catholic and the financial supports for promoting the dialogue between science and religion under the humble mind by The Templeton Foundation. The section three presents the views on religion and science relationship presented by two Christian theologians: Haught and Pannenberg. Haught approaches the religion and science as a text reading. Each, as a text reading in a special level, does not exclude two each other. Rather, when both are considered together, they reveals the genuine reality of nature. He rejects the two reductionist readings from both sided: biblical literalism as religious reductionism and as cosmological literalism scientific reductionism. Haught insists non-reductive epistemology which would provides evolutionary theism of possible way to relate faith and natural sciences. The second part of sections three is Pannenberg's view on religion and science. Defining his theological works as a theology of nature, he criticized that the division between religion and science with the categories of “why” and “how.” For him theology is not a special field but a universal science. Based on his concept of God, the reality deciding the possibilities of all realities, he presents his own relationship between theology and science as a totality of reality. Pannenberg insists that the field of theology is broader than that of science, for science concerns on natural laws, and theology deals the totality of all individual incidents.
