에트루리아의 기원에 대해서는 “Etruscan mystery” 혹은 “Etruscan problem”이라 불릴 만큼 다양한 관점이 존재한다. 그 가운데서도 리디아 이주설과 이탈리아 토착설이 가장 관심을 끌었다. 기원전 5세기 역사가 헤로도토스는 에트루리아인들이 소아시아의 리디아에서 온 이주민으로 보았던 반면, 기원 전후에 활동하였던 역사가 디오니시우스는 이들이 이탈리아 토착민이라 주장하였다. 베르길리우스를 비롯한 대다수 로마인들이 이주설을 공유하면서 이가 고대로부터의 정통설로 내려왔다면, 오늘날에는 토착설이 다수 학자들의 지지를 받고 있다. 최근에는 DNA 조사 등을 동원하면서까지 기원 문제를 해결하려하는데, 이 역시 조사 집단에 따라서 상반된 결과를 보이고 있다.
이 글은 고대에서 유일하다시피 토착설을 주장하였던 디오니시우스의 사료를 비판적으로 살펴보면서 이주설에 무게를 두고 살펴보았다. 먼저, 로마마저 그리스 계통의 국가로 만들 정도로 그리스인으로서의 정체성이 강하였던 디오니시우스로서는 자신의 출신지인 소아시아 그리스인들을 정복하고 공물을 받은 최초의 이민족 국가였던 리디아를 백안시하고 싶었을 가능성에 대해서 살펴보았다. 다음으로는 디오니시우스가 이주설을 비판하는 근거로 삼았던 것으로, 에트루리아와 리디아의 언어, 종교, 생활방식 등이 정말 서로 이질적이었던가 하는 점을 살펴보았다. 언어는 렘노스 비문의 출토로서 리디아와 에트루리아 언어의 친연성에 무게가 두어지고 있다는 점을 살펴보았고, 이어서 바로 이웃한 그리스나 이탈리아와는 확연하게 차이나는 한편 리디아와 에트루리아 사이에는 뚜렷한 친연성을 보이는 무덤 형태, 점복술, 하브로시나이적 전통 등을 중심으로 두 나라 사이의 종교적, 문화적 교류 현상을 부인할 수 없을 것이라는 점을 살펴보았다.
물론 리디아로 상징되는 일단의 사람들이 에트루리아 문명 성립에 주된 역할을 하였다고 하더라도, 이는 지중해 연안 여러 인종들 사이에 다원적, 다층적, 파상적으로 이루어졌을 가능성이 크다.
There are so many different perspectives on the origin of Etruria. Among them, the migration theory from Lydia and the Italian indigenous theory attracted the most attention. Herodotus viewed the Etruscans as migrants from Lydia, while Dionysius claimed that they were indigenous to Italy. While most of the ancient Romans and some contemporaries have shared the migration-theory, the indigenous theory became supported by many scholars nowadays. This paper put greater weight on the possibility of migration theory from Lydia, i.e. from Asia Minor. Firstly, it examines the possibility that Dionysius, who had a strong Greek identity enough to make even Rome a country of Greek origin, wanted to whitewash Lydia, the first barbarian country to conquer and receive tribute from the Greeks in Asia Minor. Next, it examined whether the language and cultural aspects, such as religion or customs, were really different between Etruscan and Lydia, the points Dionysius used as a basis for criticizing the theory of migration. As a result, it observed that close exchanges in language, religious and cultural aspects between Etruria and Lydia could not be denied, especially in the form of tombs, religious practices, and the ‘Habrosynai’ traditions, while distinctly different from neighboring Greece and Italy.
