이 글은 테라섬의 아크로티리 유적지에서 발굴된 일명 <서쪽집>에 그려진 벽화, 일명 함대, 혹은 배 프레스코화에 대한 뜨거운 논쟁을 소개하고, 새로운 해석을 시도하려 것이다. 북쪽과 동쪽 남쪽 세 벽에는 각각 해전으로 보이는 모습, 강변의 풍경, 십여척의 배들이 왼쪽의 도시를 출발하여, 오른쪽의 도시에 도착하는 항해 모습이 그려져 있었다. 이들 배 프레스코화의 배경이 어디이며, 무엇을 그리고자 하였는지에 관하여서 많은 논쟁이 있어왔다. 배경으로서는 리비아 대륙이라는 설, 레반트라는 설, 혹은 에게해 일대라는 설, 나아가서 테라 섬 자체라는 설 등 여러 가지 견해가 있다. 주제에 대해서는 이가 해전을 그린 것이라는 설, 바다 축제를 표현하고 있다는 설, 『일리아스』등의 구송시를 그림으로 나타내었다는 설 등이 있다. 필자는 이를 <청동기 시대 테라인들의 리비아 식민시 건설사>를 그려낸 것이라고 보고 이를 논증하려 하였다. 즉 아르카익기 이루어진 테라인의 키레네 식민시 건설 이전에 이미, 청동기 시대부터 테라인들은 고대 최대의 무역품이었던 실피온을 얻기 위하여 리비아에 진출하여 식민시를 건설하였으며, 이를 기념하기 위하여 그렸다는 것을 헤로도토스, 핀다로스, 고대의 화폐 등의 전거에 힘입어서 주장하고 있다.
The purpose of this paper is to interpret the famous ShipFrescos of the West House at Akrotiri in a new perspective. There have been fervent arguments on these Miniature Frescos from Akrotiri. Traditional interpretations of these are as follows: in regards to the landscape; there are various suggestions that they belong to Lybia, or the Levant, or Aegean islands, or especially to the Thera itself. About the subject of the frescos; there are also contradictory views, some seeing the sea battles, or others, sea festivals. I argue that these frescos represent and memorize the colonization of Cyrene in Lybia by the Therans in the Bronze Age. My arguments are based on the remarks of Herodoto and Pindaros, and coins of ancient Cyrene. I assume that the Therans colonized Cyrene in the Bronze age (far proceeding the story of Battos' colonization of Cyrene in the 7th century BC.) in order to get silphion, the most valuable spice in the ancient times. The weakest point of my arguments is the chronological gap between the presumable age of the frescos and the evidences I cite. However, I believe that it is not worthless to try in this way, considering the fact that most of the evidences of the Bronze age had been disappeared.
