Penile rehabilitation after radical prostatectomy

At present, survival rates of patients after treatment of localised prostate cancer approach 100%. Improvement of the methods of diagnosing this disease has resulted in administration of radical prostatectomy in even relatively young patients. In spite of the fact that radical prostatectomy is a golden standard in treatment of patients with low-risk prostate cancer, this method quite commonly leads to disorders of the erectile function and therefore might have a negative effect on the quality of life of patients. The article presents a review of Russian and world literature dealing with penile rehabilitation of patients after radical prostatectomy. The most topical and reliable methods of sexual rehabilitation are described. Penile rehabilitation should be a key component of medical aid to patients who underwent radical prostatectomy. Combining high-quality performance of nervesparing robotic radical prostatectomy and penile rehabilitation we can not only obtain an excellent oncological outcome but also fully recover the quality of life in patients with prostate cancer.

Key words: prostate cancer, radical prostatectomy, penile rehabilitation, erectile disorders.
