이 논문은 <춘향전>이 혐오의 서사이자 혐오 극복의 서사임을 밝히고자 하였다. 혐오는 사회적으로 매개되고 학습된 감정으로서 특정 집단에 대한 체계적인 차별과 배제의 근거가 되며, 한 사회는 혐오를 문화와 제도, 도덕과 법으로 체계화함으로써 해당 집단을 공동체 밖으로 밀어낸다. 춘향은 여성이자 기생의 딸이라는 특수한 신분으로, 이도령과 사랑을 시작하고 사랑을 이루어가는 과정에서도, 이별하고 버려지는 과정에서도, 새로 부임한 변사또에게 수청을 요구받고 거절했다는 이유로 폭력을 당하는 과정에서도, 심지어 그러한 폭력에서 구출되는 장면에서까지도 혐오의 시선에서 자유롭지 못하다. <춘향전>은 춘향이 전방위적 혐오의 시선과 투쟁하며 존엄한 인간으로서 혐오를 넘어서서 공동체의 일원으로 인정받는 과정을 담아낸 극복의 서사이며, 그러한 노력과 성취에도 불구하고 그녀가 완전히 혐오에서 벗어나기가 얼마나 어려운지를 보여주는 좌절의 서사이기도 하다.

This thesis attempted to clarify that “Chunhyangjeon” is a narrative of hate and overcoming hatred. Hatred is a socially mediated and learned emotion. It is the basis for systematic discrimination and exclusion against certain groups. Society pushes certain groups out of the community by organizing hate into culture, institutions, morals, and laws. Chunhyang is a woman and the daughter of a gisaeng. She is hated in her process of loving and parting with Lee Do-ryeong. She is hated in her process of experiencing violence for rejecting the request of the newly appointed Byeon Sato. Even when she is rescued from the violence, she is not free from the gaze of hatred. “Chunhyangjeon” is the story of Chunhyang fighting with the all-around gaze of hatred. This work is a narrative of overcoming hatred and becoming recognized as a member of the community and as a dignified human being. Additionally, it is a narrative of frustration that shows how difficult it is for her to escape completely from hatred despite such efforts and achievements.
