최치원의 한시를 읽다보면 그가 바다 관련 시어를 상당히 많이 사용하고 있다는 것을 발견할 수 있다. 전체시의 1/3이 바다 관련 시어를 사용한 시들이다. 그 중 바다 이미지를 가진 시들만 뽑으면 25수인데 분석한 결과 아래와 같은 결론을 얻었다.
바다 이미지는 그 의미하는 바에 따라 공간적으로 세 가지 의미를 타나낸다. 첫째로 시련과 혼탁함의 공간, 둘째로 신라라는 공간, 셋째로 단절과 이별의 공간이다.
바다는 최치원에게 고난과 시련을 주는 공간이다. 바다가 주는 시련은 시에서 환로 진척의 어려움으로 비춰진다. 동료들의 배척과 질투뿐만 아니라 당나라에 있을 때는 외국인이라는 신분이, 신라에 가서는 육두품이라는 신분이 그 장애물이 되는 것이다. 이렇게 벼슬길에서 저애 작용을 하는 바다 이미지는 또 어지럽고 혼탁한 공간으로서 세속의 욕망에 가려진 마음을 상징하기도 한다.
바다는 또 신라라는 공간을 상징하기도 한다. ‘봉래’, ‘해외’로 표현되는 신라는 기대와 희망에 부푼 정서가 동반되기도 하고 또 은거로서의 의미도 지니고 있다. 그리고 ‘해우(海隅)’로 표현되는 신라는 화엄사상을 밝히는 불교적 공간으로 형상화되기도 한다.
바다는 최치원이 친하게 지내던 사람들과 작별하는 공간이기도 하다. 바닷물은 단절을 의미하며 헤어짐을 전제로 슬픈 정서를 자아낸다.
Choi Chi-won used sea-related poetic diction a lot in his poems given the fact that one third of his poems include sea-related words. Among which, we analyzed 25 poems that have sea images and conclude as follows. Sea images signified three meanings: 1) turbidity and tribulation; 2) Silla(新羅); and 3) severance and separation. Sea brought suffering and trials to Choi Chi-won. Trials from sea were expressed as difficulties in getting promoted in government. Obstacles to promotion included rejection and jealousy from colleagues, being a foreigner when in Tang(唐) Dynasty, and being a Yukdupum(六頭品) in Silla. Sea images, acted as obstacles to promotion and being a chaotic and corrupt space, symbolized heart behind secular desire. Sea symbolized Silla. Represented as ‘Bongrae(蓬萊)’ and ‘Overseas’, Silla is accompanied with emotion full of expectation and hope and delivers the meaning of living in seclusion. Silla embodies a Buddhist shrine of Hwaeom(華嚴) ideas by being represented as ‘seaboard(海隅)’. Sea was a space where Choi Chi-Won said goodbye to his close friends. Seawater signified severance and evokes sorrow which comes after separation.
