이청준은 우리 시대의 격변기라 할 수 있는 20세기 중후반을 살아오며 문학적 시선에 의해 포착된 진실과 이면을 소설로 형상화한 작가다. 이와 같은 이청준이 1985년에 발표한 문제적 작품이 바로 「벌레 이야기」이다. 이 작품은 발표 이후 많은 이들에 의해 거론의 대상이 됐다. 그러나 1990년대 이후 진행된 연구는 이작품의 부차적 차원에 주로 주목하는 모습을 보인다. 이에 본고는 이청준의 「벌레이야기」에 나타난 본질적 차원에 접근하여 그 서사적 의미를 플롯 구성의 차원에서 살핀다. 「벌레 이야기」는 남편의 시선에 의해 포착된 또 다른 희생자 아내의 이야기가 나타난다. 여기에서는 아내가 몰두하는 세 사건이 주요한 서사 분기점으로 발생한다. 이것은 모순적 상황을 구성하며 인과적인 사건 배열을 통해 서사적 아이러니가 절묘하게 드러나는 하나의 맥락을 만든다. 이와 같은 환멸과 발견의 플롯은 개인이란 존재가 지니고 있는 주체성의 의미를 드러내는 가운데 아내의 서사를 구성한다. 또한, 이 작품에서 주요하게 드러나는 세 사건은 엄마가 자기 자식인 알암이를 위해 모든 것을 다 하며 희생하는 모습을 나타낸다. 이러한 사건 배열은 인과적으로 구성되며 알암이 엄마가 왜 범인을 용서할 수 없음에 분노했고, 갑작스런 자살을 택했는가를 이해할 수 있게 한다. 이 작품은 엄마의 행동을 통해 드러나는 비극적 요소를 효과적으로 구성하며 이를 통해 엄마의 서사를 형성한다. 본고는 이청준의 「벌레 이야기」에 담긴 철학적인 인식과 함께 미학적 형성을 플롯 구성이란 서사적 차원에서 구명했음에 의의가 있다.

Lee Chung-jun is a writer who had lived during the mid-twentieth century, the era of rapid changes, and novelized the truth and dark side of our society with his literary perspective. 「Worm Story」 is the problematic novel published in 1985. After its publication, 「Worm Story」 has gained major attention of the public. However, previous researches conducted after 1990s tend to focus mainly on its secondary aspects. Therefore, the present research focuses on the essential aspects of Lee Chung-jun’s 「Worm Story」 and examines its narrative meanings from the perspective of plot composition. 「Worm Story」 is a story of a victimized wife, captured by the viewpoint of the husband. There are three incidents that the wife is absorbed in. They create a contradictory situation and ironical context by causal arrangement of the incidents. Such demonic and disillusioned plot narratively reveals the meanings of existence and independence possessed by individuals. Also, the three major incidents demonstrate the wife’s sacrifice for her child Alam. This causal arrangement of incidents helps us understand why the wife was outraged by the fact that she could not forgive the criminal and abruptly committed suicide. This novel effectively composes the plot of sorrow and tragedy through the wife’s behaviors and completes its narrative structure. The present research is significant in a sense that it has examined the philosophical recognition and aesthetic composition of 「Worm Story」 from narrative perspective.
