Socrates failed to persuade the jury in the Athenian court that his philosophical life was the worthiest way of life. His failure, however, was primarily due to the rhetorical condition in which his political trial situated him. Now the paper asks the question whether he would succeed in presenting his life as good life, if his trial took place in the philosophical atmosphere. To answer the question, the paper turns to one of the Plato’s dialogues, “Theaetetus,”that has been traditionally regarded as dealing with metaphysical and epistemological theme. The paper pays special attention to the dramatic elements of the dialogue in order to show that the dialogue contains philosophical defense of Socrates’life. In particular, the paper examines closely two specific parts of the dialogue: argument for midwifery and digression. In the midwifery part, Socrates succeeds in rejecting the traditional criticism that Socrates himself corrupted the young, whereas in digression he succeeds in presenting his life as differentiated from the lives of Sophists or natural philosophers. In sum, the paper concludes that Socrates succeeds in presenting philosophical defense of his life in Theaetetus.
