남원 선원사 <아미타괘불도>는 1920년대 중반부터 1970년 초반에 걸쳐 약 50여 년간 활동한 퇴운 일섭이 1942년에 조성한 불화이다. 화면 구성에 있어 각 존상들의 중첩 배치와 본존불상과 협시상들의 삼각꼴 배치를 통한 원근법을 구사하여 공간의 깊이감을 부여하고, 각 존상들의 얼굴 및 손･발에 음영을 적용하는 것과 함께 눈썹과 구레나룻 및 코와 턱수염에 짙고 옅은 먹선을 사용하여 간접적인 음영을 구사하여 입체감을 보여주는 새로운 표현기법을 보여준다. 또한 화면 상부 하늘 공간을 나타냄에 있어 햇빛의 방향을 알 수 있을 만큼 밝고 어둠을 강하게 표현한 구름을 배치하고 그사이로 회청색 하늘이 엿보이는 수채화와 같은 표현을 함으로써 다른 괘불도 및 불화에서는 볼 수 없는 새로운 표현기법을 보여주고 있다.
이러한 서양화적 표현기법과 함께 <괘불도>를 조성하는데 약 600여 명에 가까운 시주자 및 보호계원(保護稧員)들이 동참하고 있음을 볼 수 있는데, 이와 같은 사실은 선원사 <괘불도>에서만 볼 수 있는 새로운 사실로서 일제강점기 시기의 불사 상황 파악은 물론 당시 시대상을 가늠해 볼 수 있는 자료로서의 가치 또한 크다고 할 수 있을 것이다.
그리고 선원사 <괘불도>의 수화승 퇴운당 일섭은 1920년대부터 근대 불교화단에 새로운 표현기법을 전파하는 선도적 역할을 해온 고산당 축연과 보응당 문성 및 호은당 정연, 춘화당 만총으로부터 직접적인 영향을 받아 불화 조성에 임해왔으며, 1940년대에 이르러서는 원근법과 명암법 등 서양화법을 전파하는 데 주도적 역할을 한 일제강점기 시기의 대표적 화승이라는 점에 주목할 필요가 있을 것이다.
명암법 및 원근법을 적용한 불화로서 색채 채용에 있어서도 선홍색 계열 적색에 명도와 채도가 높은 녹청색을 채용하여 보색 대비를 보여주면서, 황색 계열 피부색과의 적절한 색 대비를 통해 조화로움을 이루어 내고 있는 불화로서 선원사 <괘불도>가 갖는 학술 자료적 의미가 크다고 하겠다.

The Amitabha Hanging Painting at Seonwonsa temple in Namwon is a Budddhist painting painted in 1942 by Toeundang Ilseop, who was active for about 50 years from the mid-1920s to the early 1970s. In the composition of the screen, perspective is used through the overlapping arrangement of each statue and the triangular arrangement of the main Buddha statue and the c ollaborating statues t o give a sense o f depth to the space, and along with shading the face and hands and feet of each statue, by using indirect shading with dark and light ink lines on the eyebrows and sideburns, nose and beard, it shows a new expression technique that shows a three-dimensional effect.
Also, in representing the sky space at the top of the screen, it places clouds that are bright enough to know the direction of sunlight and strongly express darkness, and by creating a watercolor-like expression through which the grayish-blue sky peeps out, it shows a new expression technique that cannot be seen in other hanging paintings and Buddhist paintings.
Together with these western painting techniques, in creating the hanging painting, it can be seen that close to 600 donors and guardian members are participating. This fact is a new fac t that c an only be seen in the Hanging Painting at Seonwonsa temple, and it can be said that the value is also great as a data that can be used to gauge the phases of the times in addition to grasping the situation of Buddhist works during the Imperial Japan"s Forced Occupation period.
And the Hanging Painting at Seonwonsa temple painted by the head painter monk, Toeundang Ilseop who has been directly influenced by "Gosandang Chukyeon", "Boeungdang Munseong", "Hoeundang Jeongyeon", and "Chunhwadang Manchong", who had played a leading role in spreading new expression techniques to the modern Buddhist painting world since the 1920s, and entering the 1940"s, it is worth noting that he was a representative painter monk of the Imperial Japan"s Forced Occupation period, who played a leading role in spreading Western painting techniques such as perspective and chiaroscuro.
It can be said that the Hanging Painting at Seonwonsa temple has great significance as an academic material in that it is a Buddhist painting that achieves harmony through appropriate color contrast with yellowish skin color by adopting greenish blue with high brightness and saturation in bright red-based red, showing complementary colors contrast, even in terms of color adoption as a Budddhist painting that applies chiaroscuro and perspective.
