본 논문의 목적은 칸트 덕개념의 기본적인 의미인 도덕적 강함이 가진 성격, 내용, 역할을 면밀히 검토해서 칸트의 덕에 대한 체계적인 설명을 제시하는 것이다. 덕이 포함하는 실천이성의 자기 지배를 살펴보면 덕의 강함을 위해서는 선의지에 근거하여 법칙에 대한 존경의 감정을 계발, 강화해야 한다는 점과 덕을 위해 요구되는 강함의 정도가 사람에 따라 다르다는 점을 알 수 있다. 그리고 법칙에 대한 존경은 『도덕형이상학』의 덕론에서 소개된 의무개념을 위한 마음의 감성적 소질들 중의 도덕적 감정에 해당하며, 이러한 마음의 도덕적 소질들이 작용하는 방식을 통해 유덕한 사람의 의지 규정의 경험적 차원이 확인된다. 또한 덕이 포함하는 자기 지배가 수행하는 통제, 유지, 계발 기능을 통해 유덕한 사람의 주관적 상태에 담긴 감성적 성질들이 드러난다. 덕의 역할과 관련하여 살펴보면 덕이 가진 도덕법칙의 실행력은 직접 준칙과 행위 간의 간격을 메우는 것이 아니라 자기애의 동기나 경향에 따른 준칙을 물리치고 도덕적 준칙을 채택하는 것에 작용한다. 덕의 역할을 이렇게 이해하고 덕이 가진 법칙에 대한 존경의 강한 감정에 주목하는 것은 덕의 동기적 요소를 중시하는 것이지만 덕의 동기적 요소는 인지적 요소에 근거하며 이 두 요소는 불가분리적이다. 결국 덕을 위해 법칙에 대한 존경의 강화된 감정을 갖는 것은 도덕법칙을 인식하고 도덕법칙을 실행하는 힘을 갖는 것을 의미한다.

The purpose of this study is to present a systematic explanation of Kant’s concept of virtue by closely examining the features, content, and role of moral strength. First of all, the investigation into the autocracy of practical reason shows that one ought to develop and strengthen the feeling of respect for the law on the basis of a good will and also that the degree of the strength required for virtue differs from person to person. The respect for the law corresponds to the moral feeling, one of the natural predispositions of the mind which are introduced as the subjective conditions of receptiveness to the concept of duty in the Doctrine of Virtue of Metaphysics of Morals. The moral predispositions of the mind enable us to see the empirical dimension of the way how the will of a virtuous person is determined. In addition, the feelings in the subjective state of a virtuous person can be identified through the control, maintenance, and cultivation functions of the autocracy of practical reason. As regards the role of virtue, the strength of virtue executing the moral law is not to directly fill the gap between a maxim and action but rather to defeat the maxims of inclinations and self-love and adopt the moral maxim. Paying attention to a strengthened feeling of respect for the law emphasizes the motivational element of virtue. However having such a feeling means recognizing the moral law and having the power to execute it since the motivational element of virtue is based on its cognitive element and the two elements are inseparable from each other.
