ABSTRACT
Hurricanes are unpredictable phenomena which are associated with a significant amount of economic losses and can leave a long-lasting damaging effect on the local communities. This study reviews the existing research on economic impact of hurricane damages in the U.S. Although majority of the studies in the literature found the negative impact of hurricane damages dissipate over the years, the economic losses generally depend on the existing state of economic growth of the country and/or the economic conditions of the city/community when the hurricane hits. The study concludes that pre-disaster risk reduction activities are more effective than post-disaster recovery effort in reducing property loss and damages from hurricane.
