2015년은 아르메니아인 제노사이드가 발생한 지 100년이 되는 해이다. 올해 전 세계는 1915년에 빚어진 아르메니아인들의 참극에 해 깊은 애도를 표했다. 이런 국제사회 분위기의 조류에 힘입어 본 논문에서는 학살을 피해 세계 곳곳 으로 떠나야 했던 감독들이 제노사이드 문제를 다루고 있는 예술 화 가운데 아르메니아계 프랑스 감독인 앙리 베르누이(Henri Verneuil, 1920∼2002)의 자전 화 <메이리그(Mayrig)>와 그 후속편인 <파라다이스가 588번지(588 Rue Paradis)> 에 주목했다. 아르메니아 학살 후 프랑스로 이주하게 된 아르메니아인 가족의 굴곡진 삶을 다루고 있는 이 두 화는 회고록이나 소설 출판뿐만 아니라 이를 시나리오로 각색하여 제작된 화의 향력을 통해 제노사이드의 기억을 승화하 고 이산의 아픔을 극복한 예술인의 성장 드라마를 볼 수 있는 작품이다. 앙리 베르누이가 화를 통해 민족의 문제를 세계인들에게 각인시키고 침윤시 키는 기법을 분석하면서, 본고에서는 아르메니아 제노사이드가 발생하게 된 역사 적 배경부터 살펴보았다. 아르메니아인 제노사이드에 한 문제는 당시의 시적 배경과 국제사회의 역학관계에 한 이해를 통해서만 객관적인 진실에 근접할 수 있기 때문이다. 이러한 인식 위에 아르메니아 제노사이드 문제와 그 결과로 빚어진 디아스포라의 양상이 앙리 베르누이의 화에서 재현된 방식을 그 자신 이 쓴 소설 형식의 자서전과 두 편의 화를 비교 분석하며 살펴보았다. 또한 한 개인의 자의식이 민족역사와 집단의식으로 확장되는 양상 및 그 당위성을 주제 적⋅심미적 차원에서 보다 면히 규명하여 제노사이드 문제에 한 지성인의 비판과 우리의 시인식에 해 성찰하다.
One hundred years have passed since the Armenian genocide occurred in 1915. The world expresses deep condolences to the Armenians. Thanks to the tide of this atmosphere of international communities, this paper pays attention to the two films of a French director, Henri Verneuil, one of those who had to leave the fatherland spreading all over the world and who deals with the genocide problem: an autobiographical movie <Mayrig> and its sequel <588 Rue Paradis>. These two films, treating of the story of an Armenian family immigrated to France after the tragedy, are works we can see the dramatic growth of an artist, who sublimates the memory of the genocide and overcomes the pain of parting through the influence of film. While analyzing Verneuil’s techniques of recognizing and penetrating the ethnic issue of the world through the movie, this paper starts with the historical backgrounds of the Armenian genocide. It is because the genocide is an issue of approaching closer to an objective truth only through the historical backgrounds and the relationships of the international communities. Based on this recognition, this paper investigates how the issues of the Armenian genocide and the phases of diaspora are reproduced on Verneuil’s films by comparing the autobiography written in the form of a novel with the movie. In addition, the aspects of the expansion of individual consciousness to national identity and its justification are closely examined to reflect the correct approach for intellectuals to the problem of genocide and to our awareness of the times.
