<석당박물관> 소장 『감지은니묘법연화경』권3은 법화경 28품 가운데 「약초유품(藥草喩品)」제5, 「수기품(授記品)」 제6, 「화성유품(化成喩品)」 제7의 내용을 필사한 경전이다. 사경은 전체 108절면으로 이루어졌으며, 1절면의 크기는 세로 41.9cm, 가로 14.4cm 로서 일반적인 사경 형태에 비해서 큰 편이다.
<석당본> 사경은 사성기(寫成記)는 없으나 서지적 검토 및 표지화 및 변상도의 형식 등의 비교를 통해 보물 제269-1호 『감지은니묘법연화경』권1, 보물 제269-2호 『감지은니묘법연화경』권2,4,5,6 그리고 보물 제269-4호 『감지은니묘법연화경』권7과 본래 한 질을 구성했던 것으로 이해된다.
향후 사경의 연구는 두 가지 방향에서 추진되어야 할 필요가 있다, 하나는 사경에 쓰인 서체에 대한 연구가 심화될 필요가 있다. 사경은 형태서지학적으로 볼 때 필사본에 해당하는 대표적인 유형으로 분류된다. 따라서 필사된 내용의 성격에 대한 검토와 더불어 당시의 서체에 대한 새로운 접근이 필요하다. 다른 하나는 불교문화적인 성격에 대한 검토이다. 고려 후기의 경권신앙(經卷信仰)의 성격과 그 대상이 되었던 불경에 대한 사상적 검토가 추구되어야 한다. 이를 통하여 유물의 역사적 성격과 함쎄 사회문화사적인 의미가 정리될 수 있을 것이다.
