<이화>에 번역되어 실린 번역문학과 외국문학에 대한 논문을 중심으로 <이화>에 수용된 외국문학에 대해서 살펴보면 몇 가지의 특성을 발견할 수 있다.
첫째, 번역문학의 대상국가가 영국ㆍ미국ㆍ아일랜드ㆍ캐나다라는 영어권 국가에 편중되어 있다는 것이다. 이는 당시의 문단 경향과 일치되지 않는 현상이었다. <이화> 출신들은 기성 문단에서 관심을 갖지 않는 워즈워드와 롱펠로우의 시만이 번역되어 있다. <이화>에 번역된 작가들의 대상 국가는 영어권 국가에 편중되어 있었다.
둘째, 문학의 경향이 낭만주의에 편중되어 있으며 이는 한국의 문단사조보다 몇 년 늦은 감이 있다. 1920년대 한국 문단의 작가들은 이미 일역 세계문학전집을 통하여 낭만주의계열의 작품을 읽고 영향을 받고 있었다. 이화여전 학생들은 1920년대 문학사조의 영향을 1930년대까지 받고 있었던 것이다. 낭만주의 영향으로 번역문학에 반복되는 이미지나 모티프 역시 낭만주의적 특성을 보인다. 또 한 면으로는 낭만주의적 특성이 번역문학이 아닌 이화여전 학생들의 창작 작품에서도 발견된다.
셋째, 이화가 여자 학교임에도 불구하고 여류문인에 대한 관심과 번역은 상대적으로 적었다는 당시 이화여전 문학과의 교수진에게도 한 원인이 있다. 한국인 교수들의 주된 텍스트는 고전과 영미 남성작가들의 작품이었다.
