Abstract:
Papaver nudicaule L. (Iceland poppy) is appreciated by growers for the low heat input requirement and by consumers for the wide range of pastel flower colours. Cultivated seed populations of P. nudicaule are scarcely homogeneous. Flower quality and agronomic plant performances could be improved by a strategy that combines breeding methods with updated propagation protocols. Seed-derived plant clones were established in vitro and used in the experiments. The highest multiplication rate was found on media containing BA (0.25 mg/l) supplemented with IBA (0.3 mg/l). Shoot clusters developed in the presence of the same growth factors showed, in addition, the highest weight; the shoots were longer than those grown on the other media. The best percentage of rooted plants was obtained in the presence of IBA at 1 or 2 mg/l or IAA at 2 mg/l. Rooted plants were acclimatised in a greenhouse, and they flowered about 3 months after transfer in the open air and did not show visible variation. The use of P. nudicaule propagation and preservation in vitro for breeding purposes is briefly discussed.
