Abstract:
The Turkish tree hazel (Corylus colurna L.) can be found growing sporadically in forest habitats of central, eastern and western Serbia.
If it grows alone, it has a widely spread crown, and nut yields may be high.
However, if it grows inside the forest (in the shade), it behaves as a forest tree, reaching over 25 m in height and producing a high quality tree that is valued by the timber industry.
Nuts are small, averaging 1.79 g and 34.9% kernel.
Kernels are of excellent flavor and are in demand by the confectionery industry.
Numerous biotypes of the Turkish tree hazel have been selected in Serbia.
This paper describes seven of these selections.
