Abstract:
For the walnut trees the grafting success rate depends on the quality of the scionwood. It is not possible to obtain quality scionwood from mature trees of more than 20 years old, without applying rejuvenation pruning. Because of the lack of technical details concerning this particular type of pruning into the bibliography which we have consulted between 1996-1998 at the Didactical Experimental Station Banu Maracine, belonging to the University of Craiova, a study was carried out on 24 years old grafted walnut trees, cultivar Sibisel 44. The study was focused upon establishing the influence of various methods of pruning on both the quantity and the quality of the scionwood thus obtained. As a conclusion of our study we could say that not only the number but also the quality of scionwood obtained were influenced by the length of shortening as well as by the diameter of the cut branches. There is a positive correlation between the number of scionwood branches and the length and diameter of the mother branch, and a negative one between the same elements and the number of standard scionwood branches obtained. By thinning out the shoots resulted after the pruning applied during winter, the number of standard scionwood branches increases, the production reaching the same level as in the case of those obtained into specialised mother orchards.
