ISHS Acta Horticulturae 222: Symposium on the Fertilization of Vegetables under Protected Cultivation

HEAVY METALS IN SOME VEGETABLE CROPS AS INFLUENCED BY MUNICIPAL WASTE COMPOSTS

Authors:   D. Fritz, F. Venter
DOI:   10.17660/ActaHortic.1988.222.6
Abstract:
In the Federal Republic of Germany, the use of sewage sludge for fruit and vegetable production is prohibited (Sewage Sludge Decree of June 25 1982, having gone into effect on April 1 1983). Municipal waste composts, however, have not yet been subjected to any restriction, and can thus be used for 'improving' greenhouse soils or substrates. Since in fact - dependent on the individual suppliers - there may be variations in composts with regard to their heavy-metal contents (which sometimes may be high), experiments were set up to examine whether at all and to which extent vegetables would respond to municipal waste composts with medium heavy metal levels.
