Abstract:
The phenomenon of photoperiodism has been intensively studied since its discovery. One of the least studied problems is the origin of photoperiodism. Evolutional development of biota is closely connected with the rhythmicity of the Earth’s development. The rotation of the Earth around its own axis determines the alternation of day and night and photoperiodism. This work describes the development of the plant response to the day and night alternation and is based on the hypothesis of the photoperiodism origin suggested by the Russian physiologist Skripchinsky. The evolution of photoperiodic response in plants from the Archaean to Quaternary period is considered.
